2020: Mass COMM Scrapped in Nigerian Universities

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has scrapped Mass Communication as a singular degree in Nigerian universities’

The executive secretary of the NUC, Prof Abubakar Rasheed, said it has been unbundled into seven departments

According to him, the new developments would take effect from the 2020 university admission year.

However, the director of corporate affairs of the commission, Ibrahim Yakassai, said the course has not been scrapped but unbundled.

Yakassai said universities wishing to retain mass communication as it is, are also allowed to do so, and those who wish to adopt the new policy can do so too.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Thursday,  the NUC boss disclosed that Mass Communication had been unbundled into Media Studies, Public Relations Studies, Cinematography and  others.

His words, “The seven new programmes/departments to be domiciled in a Faculty/ School/College of Communication and Media Studies are Journalism and Media Studies, Public Relations, Advertising, Broadcasting, Film and Multi-Media Studies, Development Communication Studies, Information and Media Studies.”
