No shame in delivering baby through caesarean section–Expert

A physician, Dr Dayo Oyeleye, on Thursday said there was nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed in giving birth to a baby by caesarean section.

Oyeleye, the President, Aspire Foundation, an NGO, made the assertion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

According to him, even as most women are scared of undergoing a c-section, it remains the best option of saving the life of a mother and her baby, stressing that a c-section is mostly required when a vaginal birth delivery carries higher risk of complications.

The medical doctor said:”Bringing your child into this world through c-section should not be something to be ashamed of.

“What is important is that, both vaginal birth or c-section deliveries make you a mother of a healthy baby.

“Although, health professionals should also educate their patients on the benefits of both deliveries and when a c-section becomes the best option.

“For instance, a c-section may be carried out when the labour is not progressing in the right manner or the woman’s pelvic is too narrow.“

The president of the NGO said that the foundation would on April 27 hold a seminar to dispel the myth surrounding caesarean section.

He also said the seminar was part of activities to mark the ‘Caesarean Section Awareness Month’ which is celebrated every April.

“Other factors that contribute to it will be discussed extensively during the seminar,” he said.

Oyeleye added that the seminar will also discuss the possibility of having a vaginal delivery after a first c-section.
