Whatsapp Will Stop Working on Some Smartphones Starting From January 1, 2020

Millions of mobile users in Nigeria and other African countries maybe shocked for not being able to use the messaging app starting from Thursday, January 1, 2021.

WhatsApp Messenger, or simply WhatsApp, is an American freeware, cross-platform messaging and Voice over IP service owned by Facebook, Inc.

It allows users to send text messages and voice messages, make voice and video calls, and share images, documents, user locations, and other media.

WhatsApp would stop working on Windows Phone starting January 1, 2020. The Facebook-owned company had earlier in 2019 announced that it would drop support for all smartphones running on the Windows Phone operating system.

WhatsApp would also stop working on millions of Android and iOS devices starting February 2020. At least 85% of Nigeria’s 24 million active social media users are on WhatsApp, according to The Global State of Digital in 2019 report.

Millions of users of old smartphone users like the Motorola Droid, Samsung Galaxy S2, and HTC Desire which do not support Android 4.0.3. are in this category.

However, if you are using an Android device that is compatible with Android 4.0.3 and you are still running a previous version, then do update your device before January 1, 2021 if you still want to be using the messaging app.
