- Sings MoU with Kenya on Domain Name Registration
At this point in time, there are not enough people with both Internet Protocol version Six (6) experience and training skills in Nigeria, but Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) has stepped in to bridge the knowledge gap in Nigeria.
The Nigeria internet registry has hence set up an certificate academy on the latest internet protocol version in conjunction with AFRINIC (African Network Information Center). Afrinic is the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) for Africa. Its headquarters are in Ebene City, Mauritius.
According to President for NiRA; Sunday Afolayan the academy will provide Nigerians with IPv6 training in the same way that you earn a CCIE. CCIE Routing and Switching is a certification for expert-level engineers who need to plan, operate and troubleshoot complex, converged network infrastructures.
Speaking with journalist on this development Afolayan said this development will help Nigeria economic advantage on the internet and be at per with global cyber space upgraded internet prototype. Thisw does not in anyway replaces or stop the annual training Afrinic does for Nigerian engineers through various Internet Service Providers bodies and government.
He said, “Of course, router vendors can teach you how to configure their devices and they do provide a wealth of published material that covers some of the experience of IPv6 pioneers. However, we are just beginning to see significant deployment of IPv6 in the real world harsh operational conditions of the Internet.
This is likely to raise any number of issues which were unknown to the people who wrote existing books and training materials. But, with an academy Nigeria will be knowledge driven and skill proficiency. “
Speaking on the effort to boost the country’s recognition on the cyberspace Afolayan said more and more Nigerians needs education and continuous awareness to grow the .NG domain name.
He said “Innovators are working overtime to make our life simpler and each year brings us something new. Whether an innovative idea involves launching a new website, writing a blog, developing a web service or establishing a startup company, the domain name is a critical factor which determines the success or failure of the venture online.
The right domain name for a business or organization should reflect the brand, and will become the brand. It should be easy to remember, recognizable, intuitive, pronounceable, short, easy to type, concise, avoid trademarks conflicts, however with .NG suffixes.”
Meanwhile, the manager of .ng Country Top Level Domain (ccTLD) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kenictld, the managers of .ke ccTLD in Kenya.
The MOU will give NiRA accredited registrars the opportunity to register domain names directly in the Kenyan Registry, pay in their local currency and vice versa.
Afolayan pointed out that with the MoU, Nigerians will be able to register (locally) domains such as amasi.ke, fola.ke, aji.ke, nwazuri.ke, asha.ke, tinu.ke, uzodi.ke, fun.ke, ki.ke, chigo.ke, ron.ke, rola.ke, ugho.ke, adeni.ke, olani.ke, which are all within the Kenyan name spaces.
He explained that, “the Nigerian ccTLD is open to the entire world, so very many Nigerian domain names, such as cheu.ng, cha.ng, samsu.ng, bi.ng, shoppi.ng, routi.ng, domaini.ng etc are registered by not necessarily Nigerian entities.”
NiRA, as an Industry-led stakeholder organization, it is the registry for Nigerian Internet Domain Names (.ng), and maintains the database of names registered in the .ng country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) name space in the interest of Nigerians and the global Internet community.
