The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially disclosed its reason for detaining Dr. Rueben Abati, a former special adviser to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan.
In a brief statement on its official Facebook page on Tuesday, October 25, the anti-corruption agency said Abati was at the EFCC offices based on an invitation to explain the misappropriation of funds through his former office.
This negates the earlier reports that Abati was arrested by the commission.
The statement read: “Former Special Adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on Media, Dr. Reuben Abati, yesterday, Monday, October 24, 2016 honoured an invitation by the EFCC at the agency’s Headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria
“He is presently telling operatives of the Commission his role in the alleged mismanagement of the nation’s resources through his office. We shall keep you posted. #drreubenabati. #EFCC.”
The statement comes just after the commission also stated that ex-FCT minister under the Goodluck Jonathan administration Bala Mohammed, who was also arrested on Monday was giving the EFCC useful information about corrupt practices during his tenure.
The EFCC’s move has however annoyed some Nigerians who feel that it is wrong for the agency to make a media trial of people that are yet to be proved guilty of any crime.
