Engineering Training on Alternative Power Source for Graduates

powerProfessional bodies in the nation’s power sector have come up with a Graduate Engineering Training Scheme (GETS) for scholars to be abreast with knowledge and innovation that could revamp power generation and supply for communities across the natio

GETS which is a collective initiative conceived toward addressing the myriad challenges dwindling sub-sectors’ growth through the knowledge and capacity building scheme nationwide.

The professional bodies said that GETS is a four month scheme with strong focus on using conventional and non- conventional sources of energy and innovative models which young qualified engineers in the country can relate with.

Individuals who choose to participate will learn through conferences, seminars and workshops, facility tours, site-based experiences, individual and group projects with availability of state-of-the-art technology.

They explained that Nigerians will be empowered possible solutions that individuals or Small, Medium  Enterprises  can do so as to meet the myriad needs of the nation’s Agriculture, Infrastructure, Power and Energy industries.

The professional bodies are; Energy Institute Nigeria, Lonadek’s Cedar Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics Centre (STEM) and the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE),

According to the Managing Director of Energy Institute Nigeria, Yewande Abiose, the GETS project is in tandem with the four cardinal objectives of Royal Academy of Engineering, Global Challenge Research Fund (GCRF), Africa Catalyst Award and part of Energy Institute’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program.

Basically she said “GETS has been designed for Students, Graduates and Young Professionals to encourage continuous training, learning and development of engineering professionals within the energy industry throughout their careers.

“Our young graduates should be able to develop well-rounded Energy and Power Engineering skills with technical know-how on clean and reliable sources of power that can be used in Nigerian communities.”

She explained further, “Our long-term goal is to develop sustainable and renewable power supply sources (Solar, Bio-Mass and alternative sources in addition to on-grid and off-grid sources to local communities, thereby providing assistance in meeting the power generation targets of Nigeria with a net effect of spurring industrialization, entrepreneurship and economic development.”

Dr. Ibilola Amao of Lonadek said that the Graduate Engineering and Training Scheme (GETS) include site/field work, HSSE and QA/QC which is not currently part of the curriculum of higher learning institutions.

On-the-job exposure with mentorship, coaching and supervision, multi-disciplinary training shall be delivered to harness holistic capabilities that are critical to professionalism and entrepreneurship.

Other partners in the GETS scheme include; Yaba College of Technology and International Human Resources Development Corporation (IHRDC).
