Property worth millions of naira were destroyed yesterday night when the a section of the popular Watt Market in Calabar known as the Yoruba Line was razed.
The section is made up of mainly Yoruba traders dealing in especially, electronics among other businesses.
The fire which started around after 8pm raged continously, as there was no truck from the Fire Service to deal with the situation.
It was a frantic situation as many shops owners made futile attempts to quench the inferno. Many had to be held back as they tearfully watched their businesses go up in flames.
A shop owner, who simply gave his name as Ade said they had called the Fire Service but did not get any favorable response and had to try to deal with the situation themselves.
Though there was no official reason for the cause of the fire by relevant authorities, it was suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault.
This however puzzled the traders, who spoke with our reporter, as they claimed there has been no electricity supply in the area for sometime.
At the time of filing this report the fire was still raging, with the Fire Service still absent.
It could not be confirmed if anyone was hurt or killed in the incident.
