Confederation of African Football president Issa Hayatou is set to enjoy another four-year term at the head of African football as he seeks to extend his tenure into a fourth decade.
Hayatou, 70, was initially elected to the role in 1988 and, if he win re-elections at the CAF Congress in two month’s time, will extend to 33 years his reign as head of African football’s governing body.
However, he will face a rare challenge after executive committee member Ahmad, who uses just one name, of Madagascar declared his candidacy.
Hayatou, who is also the senior FIFA vice president, was elected unopposed at CAF’s Congress in Marrakesh in 2013 and only twice previously faced opposition to his reign, winning re-election easily on each occasion.
The next election is in Addis Ababa on March 16.
