KELECHI IHEANACHO RETURNS WITH A BRACE FOR LEICESTER CITY

KELECHI IHEANACHO scored the first goal given by VAR in English football during Leicester’s FA Cup clash against Fleetwood.

The Foxes forward was initially deemed offside when latching onto Riyad Mahrez’s pass.

Iheanacho went onto score only to see the linesman raise his flag to signal for offside.

But ref Jon Moss went to video assistant ref Mike Jones who ruled Iheanacho was actually onside.

The 77th-minute goal was Iheanacho’s second of the night after he opened the scoring in the 43rd minute.

Pundit Kevin Kilbane said: “It’s happened! It was onside, it’s the right decision.

“You do feel for the assistant but it’s such a tight call, you know its a tough one, but ultimately the final decision is now right.

“What I did like was that the decision was made upstairs. Jon Moss didn’t have to go and view it, the decision was made for him.”

Iheanacho admitted afterwards he had no clue at the time whether or not he had beaten the offside trap – but was happy VAR was there to save him.

He said: “At the time I didn’t know if I was onside or offside but VAR showed I was onside.”

It was through Iheanacho that Claude Puel’s side took the lead in this third-round replay when he slotted past Fleetwood keeper Chris Neal following Islam Slimani’s through ball.

Iheanacho could have had his second of the night earlier had Demarai Gray been able to keep the ball in play on the Cod Army touchline.

Moss also consulted with video ref Jones for that decision.

Leicester now progress to the fourth round.
