Lagos Employs 89 Companies to Construct N19.4b New Roads

Opens Two in Ikorodu

NewswatchNigeria can report that not less than eighty-nine (89) indigenous contractors were employed to execute the 114 road projects newly carried out in Lagos state.

Valued at N19.4 billion, the 114 road projects is the total number of newly executed roads in all the 57 Local Government Area and Local Council Development Areas (LCDA) of the state.

The commissioning of the roads was officially flagged-off on Saturday (17^th September, 2016) and continues till 24th of this month.

It was Ikorodu West (LCDA) turn today(Tuesday). There was jubilation at the venue’ as Governor Akinwunmi Ambode officially opened the two new roads at the council by constructed the state government.

Represented by Chairman Committee on Wards and Infrastructure, Hon. Abiodun Tobun, Gov. Ambode explained that the LCDA targeted projects is 56.1 kilometers of standard new roads, more than 112kilometers of walkways and covered drainages with more than 56 kilometers of independently-powered streetlights to enhance neighbourhoods securities and facelifts.

In his speech he reiterated his administration’s commitment to build a system that supports the wishes and aspirations of the state residents and the dividend of democracy is delivered to the majority.

He further explained, “We started this journey by asking our communities, through the Community Development Associations, to identify the roads that need improvement in their areas. We received hundreds of requests and picked two per each local government to rehabilitate 114roads across the state. To ensure transparency and accountability, we established a bidding process in line with international best practices, which has produced 89 indigenous contractors.”

“Today, we celebrate the translation of that vision to action, the transformation of our dream to reality. Across the length and breadth of our state, from the nooks and cranny of Badagry and Igbonla, from the corners of Odeomi to the creeks of Ikorodu, a new Lagos is emerging at the centre and environs,” he said.

The Sole administrator, Ikorodu West LCDA, Hon. Segun Anifowoshe who spoke on behalf of the residents lauded Gov. Ambode for his resourcefulness and doggedness at ensuring that the local government is witnessing the change mantra and reaping the dividends of democracy.

Anifowoshe in his remark further hinted that the two projects are “just first in the series of many to come.” He therefore urged the residents of the areas to put the roads into good use.

”We should monitor and protect them from vandals, let us avoid dumping of refuse in the drainages breaking and digging of the roads for water and other works should be avoided, our roads should not be used as automobile workshops and other vices that can damage them,” he advised the residents.

Some residents who spoke with NewswatchNigeria reckoned that the neighbourhood had received a face-lift with the street light and completion of the roads.

However, like an Oliver twist the residents urged the Governor to do more for them by providing good clinics to ensure quality healthcare delivery.
