Nigeria Government has planned monetary reward for athletes that represent the country well at the Commonwealth Games.
The government has reportedly said it would shower $5,000 about (One Million, eight hundred thousand naira) on any gold medal athletes.
Any among the 90 athletes that gets to the silver medal zone would be $3,000(One Million and eighty thousand naira) richer.
A Nigerian bronze medal athlete at the Australia Games would cart away $2,000, which is about (N750,000).
Sportinglife.ng has gathered that Team Nigeria for the Australia 2018 Commonwealth Games is made up of 90 athletes.
The athletes would be participating across several competing events for the next 11 Wednesday in the resort city of Gold Coast.
The Nigerian team will mostly participate in the Athletics events, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Boxing, Special Sports, Table Tennis and Gymnastics besides, the Men’s basketball team D’Tigers who are grouped alongside hosts Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
Sprint sensation Blessing Okagbare remains Nigeria’s medal hopeful in athletics. You would recall that she recently broke the African 200m record of 22 years held by Mary Onyayi-Omagbemi.
However, as gathered she might only run for the women 4x100m as she has not been registered for the sprints.
The Commonwealth Games has been a good hunting ground for Nigerian sports men and women, however, it remained to be seen how they will cope with other athletes from the 53 member nations of the Commonwealth who have been better prepared.
Nigeria participated in the Games for the first time in 1950 in Auckland, New Zealand and made her presence felt in a huge way as Joshua Majekodunmi won the very first medal for the country in the High Jump.
