Nigeria strengthens partnership with Canada on technology

Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, Minister of Science and Technology

The Federal Government on Thursday said it would deepen its partnership on technology with Canada to boost national development.

Dr Ogbonnaya Onu made this known in Abuja when he received Ms Amy Galigan, the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria.

He said a strengthened relationship would help Nigeria to grow its economy.

“Nigeria and Canada have had a long standing relationship. They need to build on the collaboration particularly in the area of science and technology.

“Many of the agencies in the ministry are working closely with their counterpart in Canada and also use some Canadian technologies.

“We believe that this will get better in time.”

Onu said that the Nigerian economy was undergoing a difficult phase due to long-term over-reliance on crude oil as the only source of income for the country.

“Nigeria is always affected negatively any time there is as a sharp drop in crude oil prices in the international market.

“We now want to move our economy away from reliance on only one commodity.”

Earlier, Galigan commended Nigeria and called for boosting of efforts to advance all fields of technology in the country.
