Nigerians in Diaspora are dissatisfied over the spite of terrorism in their homeland. They are grieved that religious extremism is igniting the unrest and the federal government under the watch of President Muhammadu Buhari should have dealt decisively with it.
The Nigerians yesterday staged a protest at the United Nations Building and Nigeria House in New York City asking world nations to prevail over Shiite extremism in Nigeria and that its leader Mr Ibraheem El-Zakzaky be prosecuted.
According to the protesters, Zakzaky’s led Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), is like Boko Haram and may escalate into a full blown terrorist group if ignored.
“if the mistake of also pampering the movement is repeated by not prosecuting members of the Islamic IMN and its leader for their acts of violence against the state and against citizens of Nigeria then the nation may be on the verge of nurturing another full blown terrorist organization,” the group spoke person, Cosmas Collins said during the protest.
“The group’s members have mirrored every single crime committed by Boko Haram in its formative years yet nothing significant have been done to put its members on trial for breaching the peace in manners that resulted in the loss of life,” he added.
Though Zakzaky has since being in detention in Nigeria but the Nigeria diasporas said he should be prosecuted warning that “delay in prosecuting detained IMN leaders could be a silent plea for international backing by the Nigerian government.”
Adding that “the Federal Republic of Nigeria should be able to assure he world that they have the what it takes to for nip the growing terror of IMN in the bud by prosecuting the leader of the group.”
Reiterating its message the group said the firmness with which the federal government deals with the IMN threat is a matter of global interest pointing that delay in dealing with the threat posed by the group will affect the whole world.
Therefore the protesters said Nigerian government should consider bringing charges of subversion against members of the group for inviting Iranian intervention in Nigeria’s internal affairs,
They added that government should investigate the finances of the group and its senior members to see if they have been beneficiary of Iranian sponsorship of terrorism.
