Suspected armed robbers attacked officials of the Warri Wolves Football Club on Friday, seizing N3.5 million out of the bonus meant for the players.
A source, who disclosed the incident, said the officials were waylaid while returning from the bank where they went to withdraw money.
Azuka Chiamaka, spokesman of the club owned by the Delta state government, was said to be among the officials involved in the attack.
“The incident happened last week Friday, but they have been trying to prevent the information from spreading,” the source said.
“The officials had left the bank opposite Urhobo College, and were so close to Peabody Hotels, in Uvwie local government area, when they were attacked. The players lodged in the hotel.
“The attackers were said to be dressed in military uniform.”
Chiamaka declined to comment on the issue, saying he was at a meeting, but Celestina Kalu, spokeswoman of the Delta state police command, confirmed the incident, and said investigation was on-going.
